Know about Fibroids!

Fibroids are the most common pelvic tumors in women of reproductive age and more prevalent in black women.

Fibroids also known as uterine leiomyomas or myomas are growths that develop in or around the womb (uterus).

They are the most common pelvic tumors in women of reproductive age and more prevalent in black women.

These grow in size in response to an increase in estrogen hormone

They are non cancerous and typically don’t transform to cancer, when they do the incidence is 0-2%.

Symptomatically they cause heavy and abnormal periods, pelvic pain, pelvic pressure and infertility.

Fibroids are typically diagnosed during a pelvic exam, can be seen and measured on an ultrasound. When diagnosed with Fibroids;

1. know how many they are.

2. Know their location, do they extend to the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus) ?

3. Know their sizes.

Treatment depends on the symptoms, size, location and fertility desires.
